Engagement Guest vs Wedding Guests- Who To Cut?- Komodo Music DJs

So if you have just gotten engaged, you might be excitedly trying to organise an awesome engagement party, or maybe you have just had yours and now are focusing on the wedding itself.

…but then a slow creeping realisation comes to you…you can’t invite everyone at your engagement as a guest to your wedding!

Sure you would like to, but I am also sure we would all like to have our own island, private jet, and $10 million dollar mansion, the problem is that all costs money, and believe or not, you aren’t made out of the stuff!

So what do you do? How do you not invite someone to your wedding who was at your engagement party? Should you only invite the people who will be attending your wedding to the engagement? Well while everyone may have their own personal opinions, here is mine not only from a guy who has gone through this, but someone also in the wedding industry as well:

Step 1: The engagement is NOT a wedding

So many people seem to forget this and go full crazy in the preparation. An engagement party should be that! A Party! Now some parties is an open invite, others is more of a selected assembly of people, but unlike a wedding there is no expectation to be invited. Now you can make it a very well organised party, but if you start spending over a 1/3 of what you will on the wedding and think personalised keychains for those attending is a good idea, congratulations, you have officially gone overboard!

Step 2: Invite the people you like to your engagement

If you invite people out of obligation, you set yourself up for failure. Phil down in Accounting who you say a friendly hello to in the elevator every morning might be a nice guy, but you don’t need to invite him to your engagement even if some of your friends in the office are going. He will say congrats to you in the elevator. Same with your boss, same with your friend from high school who you occasionally like their Facebook post. It’s not whether you would mind them being at your engagement, it is do you WANT them at your engagement.

Step 3: You have a lot of friends….who to invite to the wedding?

Ok, let’s say we have followed the 2 steps and you have 150 people coming to your engagement. Wow, aren’t you Miss popular! Problem is, you only have a budget for 85 people for the wedding reception. That means some of the people who you are having a drink with and gave you a small present for your engagement will not be attending the wedding.

…and you know what? That is ok!

Phil from accounting is really happy you invited him to the engagement but was not expecting an invite to the wedding. Most people don’t, especially when it is very clear you have so many friends.

The problem comes usually with these kind of scenarios:

Scenario 1

You have been friends with Jill and Kat since high school, you all hang out together occasionally but you normally are always seeing Kat for coffee. You invited them both to the Engagement but now you have looked at the numbers, you can only invite one person to the wedding. You want to invite Kat because you see her more, but you are worried what Jill will think…

Scenario 2

You only had 20 people at your engagement and you are telling everyone how amazing your wedding is going to be and everyone is going…except Sam, your friend from work who you are friendly with but don’t see outside of the office. Since everyone from the office (who you are friends with outside work hours) was going you felt obliged to invite him too. He then asks what the date will be and he will ensure he books it off free…

Sound familiar?

At the end of the day, sometimes egos will be bruised, but it is not their ego paying for this wedding, its YOU! In Scenario 1, most people would understand, and if they don’t, then they aren’t really your friends. In Scenario 2, being friendly is not the same as being friends. If you explain to anyone who might have their feathers ruffled that it is purely a budget thing most will understand…if you just don’t like them…why did you invite them in the first place?

Hopefully this will help give some perspective when deciding on who to invite:-)

Deciding on Music and DJs for 2015- Komodo Music DJs

CDs stacked up against more CDs

So with the start of the wedding season and the finishing of the first expo for the year, now is a good time to give some help of what they should be doing with their music choices and how to go about selecting a DJ

Decide on a DJ

Sometimes you will meet a DJ and feel that they are best thing for your wedding, other times (most commonly) you are so overwhelmed with choices and you don’t know where to start.

The first thing you have to decide on is your budget for a DJ (see the blog “Pricing Perth DJs” for further help)

Once you have done that, it is time to do some Googling! Research is the key and it is important to ensure that no matter who you choose, you are comfortable with your selection. A good tip is to narrow down your choice to 3 or 4 and the use a graph to determine where each stand (A template can be found here: “Price Vs Quality“). It may take you an extra 5 minutes but is 5 minutes more work worth ensuring your supplier is worth it?

Once you have decided on who you want to go with, now it’s time to have a meeting with them. Some DJs who are sole traders you can have this meeting face to face, other larger companies with more DJs you can usually do this first one over the phone and have a physical face to face with your selected DJ closer to the time.

Be sure to ask your questions (see ‘What questions to a DJ”) and once you are happy; just pay your deposit (see “Paying Deposits for your wedding“)

In the months that follow…

You would have been set homework with your music, so don’t wait till the last minute, start it now!

A good hint is to have a pad and paper in the car and write down any songs that you like as you hear them. Print off exactly what songs you need to pick (i.e. Bridal Waltz, entrance song, cake cutting, etc) and stick it on the fridge. That way you actively look out for songs to fill in for it.

Now picking music is hard, and you and your partner will not always see eye to eye, but just remember that it is better to have too much music than not enough. At the same time, providing you pick your important songs, the DJ can help you with the rest

3 months to go….

About this time you should be meeting up with your DJ again to go through and finalise most of the important songs. Komodo Music would get you to meet with your official DJ for the first time and it is important you get to know them. If for any reason you are unhappy, let us know why and we can either change them over or fix the problem now. Remember this is your day and any DJ or DJ Company worth their decks will do anything to make sure the music and music man is a perfect fit

2 weeks before the wedding

Now is your final chance to change any songs, cause after this, it is not fair on the DJ. Most DJs will be doing the playlists the beginning of the week of your wedding, and with DJ Companies you are not the only bride they are dealing with so ensure you:

  1. Are 100% happy with all the important songs you have chosen
  2. You have submitted any music requests (either via email or via an Online Music Library)
  3. You have paid any remaining balance on the account

Even though the DJ will be ready to go, feel free to give them a buzz to put your own mind at ease

Wedding Day

Remember to have fun!

If on the night things need to be changes, ask the DJ and if it is within their power, they will do it. Make requests if you want, ask the DJ to switch things up, whatever will make you dance, the DJ will happily do!

Hopeful Packs- Komodo Music helping the homeless

Hopeful Packs Logo

In Western Australia, there are almost 10,000 people living on the streets. About a year ago I came up with the idea to try and help these people. So after much preparation, I have created “Hopeful Packs

YouTube Preview Image

Each pack can be made for $10.70 and include:
A toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, 2x packets of tissues, 5x band aids, 5x sealed ziplock bags, a notebook and pens, A rain poncho, a pair of socks, a beanie,5x servings of jam, 2 energy bars,2x 600ml water bottles, and a loaf of bread

I have made 10 already from my own pocket, but we want to create more…200 to be exact.

If you can donate any amount to this cause, you will be helping those get a leg up and know they may be homeless but are not forgotten.

To donate, check out our Indiegogo campaign here

Thank you all for helping those doing it tough:-)
